Week 3 - Presentation and Idea Refinement

After presenting ideas I wanted to reflect on some of the comments and thoughts I had after the powerpoint. Here is some of the feedback I received on the microcosm (using alphanodenogg.in) -

 Most of the feedback here summarises my presentation but there are a few comments that expand on my ideas further. For example I studied Frank Gehry in my first year when doing a project surrounding impossible geometry so his work may come in handy if I choose to pursue architecture. I am also familiar with the religious symbolism of numbers when building places of worship for example so I could go down this route too.

I personally didn't like the dream psychology idea after I had developed it for the presentation so that has been scrapped from future plans. There were quite a few discussions around architecture in various ways and as much as I love the topic, I think I want a little more creative freedom as oppose to keeping it centred around buildings. From there I have been torn between tattoo culture and idioms. I came to the conclusion that idioms feel a little confined. They are already expressions in themselves, so again, there feels like a lack of creative freedom there. When I was brainstorming tattoo culture I found it relatively easy to quickly generate ideas and pockets of interest within the topic and I think it could be stretched into a wide variety of ideas so this is the concept I will be taking forward. The next task is to further brainstorm some ideas based on prompts given by our lecturer and create a quick thumbnail sketch to try and convey our idea by using only visuals;

I took the idea of using an image of a woman from the 1900's and sketching it out with tattoos layered over the arms, neck and face. I also chose to sketch traditionally rather than digitally as I felt that digital brush strokes wouldn't have represented the gritty old-fashioned tattoo culture that I wanted to capture here. We then asked others what they would predict our theme to be based on the thumbnails we drew out. I received two pieces of feedback which suggested my theme could be 'Spooky Paintings' or 'Portraits'. This led me to think that the thumbnail I sketched out didn't convey the tattoos strongly enough or perhaps I should make a more obvious contrast of these in the future so I may return to this exercise to create a more obvious representation of tattoo culture.

After the thumbnail exercise we were given some headings from our lecturer to help expand on our ideas. These were characters, technology, films, colour, journals, locations, books, shapes, language, sounds, movement, historical, context, structures (hierarchy) and facts. Here is what I brainstormed:

I found after doing this brainstorm that I gravitated towards some ideas much more strongly than others. For  example I really like the technology side of tattooing and the contrast between the ancient craft interpretation and how they are also being developed to support the future. I also came across sailor culture in relation to tattoos (sailors would have imagery such as turtles tattooed on them when they achieved a certain thing such as crossing the equator). I think this could lean into a narrative story really well with tattoos acting as achievements or some such. The other idea I was really drawn to was the idea of the inked ladies circus act. I need to do a lot more research into these subjects but I think they are all really strong ideas that I would love to look into and develop further.
