Week 8 - Filling the Environment

This week marks the ending of our degree projects as we now have just over 6 weeks left until our final handin. We had a group meeting discussing the arcade that our projects will be showcased at and the branding of the event as well as some other updates. I have written a list of ideas that we would like to incorporate into our marketing plan for these events, including:

- Designs for the arcade case where people can play the game & a banner design (e.g. colour schemes, title and added vinyl stickers of our characters if possible)

- Postcards and Business Cards themed around the game for people to take away, some with 3D printed / hand-sculpted charms (acts as a souvenir and a marketing strategy to help people to remember the game)

- Trailers to showcase including a gameplay trailer and a behind-the-scenes development video

- A booklet to read through with devlogs so people can discover what went into making the game at the shows

- Perhaps headphones or a speaker playing sample music we had made and tested for the game

- A small dollhouse showcase with various assets and character models from the game alongside our hand-sculpted assets on display

After this meeting I re-organised our pipeline now that we have limited time and more specific dates and tasks to work to.

Unfortunately we had to scope down our project quite a bit but we wanted to make sure our final result was more polished instead of spreading ourselves too thin. We have had to remove the journal mechanic and pickup overlays meaning my 2D artwork and descriptions cant be used but that's the nature of the design. Instead I can channel my efforts into finished results for the game.

This week I have worked on poster designs and finishing the hand-sculpts for the project to compliment James' 3D modelling in the environment. Our main two priorities at this point are getting the narrative implemented and the environment filled out. Below are some posters I made for each ladies' section of the tent;

For our final meeting this week we spoke to our lecturer about implementing a narrative system to get the player to engage with our characters to discover more about the story. This wasn't the original plan but because we have had to remove some mechanics we have decided to re-introduce some narrative elements. We wrote up a short script and started to feed the narrative into the game, however it only allowed us to have limited responses and answers. We have decided to move forward with an xml script to allow branching pathways within our narrative. Our lecturer very kindly has said he will put something together for us before next week so hopefully we will be able to implement most of the narrative then. We have also decided not to include the photograph mechanic in the game at the moment as the gameplay will still work without it and we have more important elements to prioritise.
